What do high school leaders do at Outdoor Lab?

High school leaders are students from neighborhood Jeffco high schools. Students apply for this opportunity through their high school counselors and must qualify based on grades, attendance and behavior. Eligible students show an aptitude for leadership and demonstrate responsibility and enthusiasm for serving in this role. Participation is approved by the students’ counselors and parents.

Responsibilities while attending Outdoor Lab include:

  • Preparing, planning and training for teaching one core class that is taught multiple times
  • Participating in daily staff meetings
  • Helping at meal time
  • Engaging in evening activities and bunkhouse time
  • Clean-up in the bunkhouses
  • Evaluating student behavior on the trails, at meal times and in the bunkhouses on a daily basis
  • Monitoring and reporting any health and/or behavioral concerns to teachers or Outdoor Lab staff
  • Modeling a positive attitude and behavior
  • Training to alert staff to any situation where students are not meeting behavioral expectations or unsafe/inappropriate behavior is observed.
